Alan Smithee movie collection

    Robert Totten spent a year directing Death of a Gunfighter for Universal but had frequent clashes with the star, Richard Widmark and was replaced by Don Siegel. When it was to be released Siegel didn't think he should have his name on it since Totten had shot most of it. The Director's Guild of America decided it would be credited to a fictional Alan Smithee. Since then, it was a Hollywood secret that if a director felt their work was compromised they could contest to have their name removed and Smithee could be used instead. By the time An Alan Smithee Film: Burn Hollywood Burn (the less said about that, the better) was released the "secret" was known by much of the public and the name lost its usefulness. 

     I made this collection based on the idea of "what if Smithee actually was a man that directed these movies" and gave this "great" director a box set like Hitchcock, Wilder, etc. have gotten.

  Panic Room is another movie that could have been quite different looking than what we know today. Before Jodie Foster was cast in the led Nicole Kidman had already filmed for three weeks but had to leave because of an aggravated knee injury. Before she became from the tv series "Heroes", Hayden Panetierre was set to play the daughter but was replaced by Kristen Stewart before she made it big with Twilight . One other surprising bit of original casting is that Dwight Yoakam's role was originally offered to Tool's lead singer Maynard James Keenan. Director David Fincher had wanted him after directing Keenan in a music video.

Breakfast at Tiffany's starring Marilyn Monroe 1961

          It is hard to imagine the movie  Breakfast at Tiffany's  without Audrey Hepburn. Her image as Holly Golightly has been on posters, t-shirts and just about anything else you can buy. However when the author of "Breakfast at Tiffany's", Truman Capote, heard that she going to be cast in an adaptation of his book he thought she was terribly miscast. He had wanted Marilyn Monroe to play his lead character. She was offered the role but was advised against it. A young Steve McQueen was offered the male lead but was unavailable. The role that I would like to see recast is Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi. Couldn't they have gotten someone more appropriate like Alec Guiness or Marlon Brando? The original director was to have been John Frankenheimer.      If they had gone with those original choices the film could have been quite different.
