Billy Bright Comedy Collection (Dick Van Dyke)

To continue with the 1960s I present another movie from 1969. Unlike the last one that was written, produced and directed by Anthony Newley to showcase himself, this one was written, produced and directed by Carl Reiner to showcase his friend Dick Van Dyke. The Comic is about a silent film comedian narrating his life and talking about his bad breaks, the flashbacks however show that he was the problem. The "modern day" parts are drama, but it has clips of the character's old movies where you can see Van Dyke doing classic slapstick. Michelle Lee played Billy's wife and Mickey Rooney played a fellow silent comedian.

Raiders of the Lost Ark with Tom Selleck 1981

 Since a new Indiana Jones movie is coming out I think it is good time to revisit the first one. However this is the one that almost was. Most people know Selleck was originally cast but there were a lot of changes before it was finally filmed. The synopsis on the back of the DVD cover above will cover some of them. I first heard about Toht's mechanical arm when I got the book "Raiders of the Lost Ark: the Illustrated Screenplay and page 87 had a storyboard drawing of a very different Toht than we know today.  The illustration I used for the front cover is from an old Playboy and I believe Joann Daly is the artist.

Panic Room Nicole Kidman 2002

  Panic Room is another movie that could have been quite different looking than what we know today. Before Jodie Foster was cast in the led Nicole Kidman had already filmed for three weeks but had to leave because of an aggravated knee injury. Before she became from the tv series "Heroes", Hayden Panetierre was set to play the daughter but was replaced by Kristen Stewart before she made it big with Twilight . One other surprising bit of original casting is that Dwight Yoakam's role was originally offered to Tool's lead singer Maynard James Keenan. Director David Fincher had wanted him after directing Keenan in a music video.
