    David Johansen died on February 28th. He was the last surviving members of the New York Dolls. The Dolls were pioneers of the punk scene and influenced, with both their look and sound, bands like Kiss and Twisted Sister. After putting out albums in 1973 and 1974 they went their separate ways. This is a 1979 album that never was. From Johansen's album In Style, I grabbed the title song, "She" and two songs he co-wrote with Sylvain Sylvain: "Wreckless Crazy" and "Flamingo Road". From Sylvain Sylvain's eponymous album I chose "Teenage Dreams", Tonight" and "Emily". Johnny Thunders' October 1978 album So Alone gave me two songs that he wrote with Johansen, "Subway Train" and "Downtown". In 1979 Jerry Nolan and Arthur Kane put a single with the band The Idols. Both songs, "You" and "Girl That I Love" and on this "What If" album.

          It is hard to imagine the movie  Breakfast at Tiffany's  without Audrey Hepburn. Her image as Holly Golightly has been on posters, t-shirts and just about anything else you can buy. However when the author of "Breakfast at Tiffany's", Truman Capote, heard that she going to be cast in an adaptation of his book he thought she was terribly miscast. He had wanted Marilyn Monroe to play his lead character. She was offered the role but was advised against it. A young Steve McQueen was offered the male lead but was unavailable. The role that I would like to see recast is Mickey Rooney as Mr. Yunioshi. Couldn't they have gotten someone more appropriate like Alec Guiness or Marlon Brando? The original director was to have been John Frankenheimer.      If they had gone with those original choices the film could have been quite different.   Wham! were huge in the 1980s. When they broke up George Michael's career soared. Even though Andrew Ridgeley was half of Wham! when I would mention his name people would ask "Who?". If I replied he was "the other one from Wham!" people understood. The same year Michael released L isten Without Prejudice Vol.1  Ridgeley released his solo album Son of Albert . Blade Runner pop soundtrack 1982 Various Artists

  My friend Stefan asked me what songs I would put in a movie that just had incidental music. That got me thinking, he chose Star Wars,  I chose Blade Runner . As much as I love the Vangelis score I could imagine the studio saying "C'mon Ridley we need to get some popular musicians on the soundtrack so we can make a profit." Stefan's rule was that the music had to be from the year the movie came out and no more than two years before. For the opening I have "Cruiser" by The Cars, when Deckard is chasing after Zhora "Unchained" by Van Halen would be playing, Sammy Hagar's "Surrender" would underscore Deckard with Rachel in his apartment, "Misunderstanding" by Genesis when Deckard calls Rachel from Chinatown, when Roy Batty is talking to Leon "Refugee" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers would be playing and Foreigner's "Urgent" playing during Batty's running after Deckard.
