South of Sunset- tv series starring Glenn Frey

     Glenn Frey has been featured on this blog as a musician before (such as last week's post) but this week is Glenn Frey: Actor. He made a mini-movie music video for his song "Smuggler's Blues" which, essentially, got turned in an episode of Miami Vice called "Smuggler's Blues" with Frey cast in a featured role. In 1986 he was in Let's Get Harry with Robrt Duvall and Gary Busey, directed by Alan Smithee (who was also featured on this blog before). In 1989 he was in seven episodes of the series Wiseguy. The 1993 series South of Sunset looked like his big acting break. He was cast in the lead as a Beverly Hills detective. Aries Spears (of MadTV and Josie and the Pussycats) was his co-star. It looked like they were trying to get a 48 Hours kind of vibe. Spears even does a variation of Eddie Murphy's routine about the first black president.

      Ironically the pilot was not scene where the series took place because it was pre-empted by news coverage of the Malibu wildfires. The ratings were so low it was cancelled after the first episode. Four other episodes that were filmed were finally shown on VH1 in 1994 to coincide with their Eagles documentary. What if the series actually got a shot at a full season? Above you see what the DVD release could have looked like.

        Many a person on the internet has come up with "what if The Beatles stayed together" so I was going to avoid this. Years ago, a co-worker and I talked about this idea and, dog gone it, it keeps going through my head, so here we are. Everest was what Abbey Road was going to be called. Since they didn't use it then I figured they could use it on their next album. John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band  from 1970 has Ringo on drums. Spinal Tap - Shark Sandwich 1980

       I've used Spinal Tap before on this blog (Loving Large, The Fantastic 80s, The Singing Sixties and The Namesake Series of audiobooks) and to honour their new movie, I present SHARK SANDWICH, the album with the two word review. The front cover is the from the movie, the band photo was taken by Bob Gruen at CBGB's and the back illustration and design is by me.      To make a playlist I used "Sex Farm" from the This is Spinal Tap soundtrack and "Rock 'n' Roll Nightmare" which can be found on their Back From the Dead album. I also used two songs from other heavy metal parodies: "Drink Till I Die" by Bad News from the series The Comic Strip Presents and "Black Moon" by Strange Fruit as seen in the movie Still Crazy. The Beatles - Live at Madison Square Garden

       After 1975 John Lennon wanted to spend more time with his son Sean and less time with The Beatles but that didn't mean there wasn't a new album in 1976. After recording Blast From Your Past , McCartney suggested a tour again. They settled on one live performance at the end of 1975 in New York City so John could go back to the Dakota afterwards. In this alternate reality a live album of the event would released in 1976.      In reality, John joined Elton John at Madison Square Garden for three songs on 28 November 1974. All three songs can be found on disc three of the Lennon  box set from 1990. Paul played the Garden with his band Wings in May of 1976. Selections from the tour were on the triple album Wings Over America . George Harrison played with Ravi Shankar at the Garden in December of 1974.
