Traveling Wilburys Vol. 2

         In 1988 the Traveling Wilburys released their first album Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1. The group consisted of George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Roy Orbison and Bob Dylan. In 1990 they released Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3. What about 1989? Roy Orbison had died before Volume 1 was released and Bob Dylan was busy, but the other Wilburys were working with another rock idol of theirs: Del Shannon.
To make a volume two I compiled songs from Del Shannon's Rock On! (which was co-produced by Jeff Lynne), Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever (which was produced by Lynne, Petty and Mike Campbell), Jeff Lynne's Archair Theatre and George Harrison's Best of Dark Horse 1976-1989.
     I open the album with Del's "Walk Away" which was written by him, Tom and Jeff. Next is "I Won't Back Down", written by Tom & Jeff, with Tom, Jeff and George all playing and singing. Third song is "Cockamamie Business" from George. Following is "I Got You" with Del, Jeff and George. I chose "Runnin' Down a Dream" for song six not only because Tom and Jeff co-wrote it (with Mike Campbell) and Tom sings "me and Del were singing..." but also because of a funny bit on the CD version that has Del joining the two of them making barnyard noises. Side two of the album starts with George's "Poor Little Girl". Tom's "A Mind with a Heart of Its Own" follows. "Cheer Down" was a single from the Lethal Weapon 2" soundtrack written by George and Tom, as well as produced, sung and played by George and Jeff. "Hot Love" from Del also has Jeff, Tom and George on backing vocals. Volume 3 closes with Jeff's "Blown Away". I was going to have it the E.L.O fantasy from two weeks ago but sing since it was written by Jeff and Tom and features Del on backing vocals I put it here. Unfortunately, I really liked how it closed out the mini concerto for a rainy day on album from May 23.

       I've used Spinal Tap before on this blog (Loving Large, The Fantastic 80s, The Singing Sixties and The Namesake Series of audiobooks) and to honour their new movie, I present SHARK SANDWICH, the album with the two word review. The Beatles - Live at Madison Square Garden

       After 1975 John Lennon wanted to spend more time with his son Sean and less time with The Beatles but that didn't mean there wasn't a new album in 1976. After recording Blast From Your Past , McCartney suggested a tour again. They settled on one live performance at the end of 1975 in New York City so John could go back to the Dakota afterwards. In this alternate reality a live album of the event would released in 1976.      In reality, John joined Elton John at Madison Square Garden for three songs on 28 November 1974. All three songs can be found on disc three of the Lennon  box set from 1990. Paul played the Garden with his band Wings in May of 1976. Selections from the tour were on the triple album Wings Over America . George Harrison played with Ravi Shankar at the Garden in December of 1974. Songs of Edgar Allan Poe

           Albums are oft put out of assorted artists covering songs of a certain songwriter. I remember when I got Red Hot + Blue in 1990, which had modern musicians doing Cole Porter tunes. Since Halloween is this Friday I wanted to do an album of songs using Edgar Allan Poe's words. The first rule I set for myself was no more than one song from any artist. Buddy Morrow, Spectral Kaleidoscope and Glass Prism did complete albums based on Poe's work. Alan Parsons also did a complete record of music influenced by Poe but did not use any actual lines written by him. Second rule was the songs had to use Poe's words.
